Collection Strategy
Our collection structure has been carefully designed to balance historical integrity with contemporary relevance and long-term commercial sustainability.
Collection Composition
70–75% Historic Worpswede & Heritage Works
Museum-quality works spanning 1889 through the present day, focused primarily on historically significant artists connected directly to Worpswede.
This forms the core identity of the gallery.

Contemporary Works
- Rotational exhibitions of contemporary Worpswede artists
- Major contemporary exhibition programme planned for 2027
- Ongoing presentation of both emerging and established local artists
- Curated opportunities for collectors and partners to acquire contemporary works
- Direct sales alongside the historical exhibition programme
- Integration of contemporary practice within the wider Worpswede narrative
- Occasional limited editions and special contemporary presentations
This approach ensures contemporary art remains a living and active part of the gallery programme, supporting long term relevance, collector engagement, and sustainable growth alongside the historic collection.
Curatorial Balance
At Village Gallery, we have intentionally dedicated 20% of our exhibition space to contemporary art. While our identity is firmly rooted in Worpswede’s heritage, we believe in supporting its future by creating a dialogue between tradition and modern artistic expression.
This allocation allows us to support living artists, encourage experimentation with new mediums and ideas, and keep the gallery relevant and engaging for both established collectors and new audiences.
By balancing heritage with innovation, Village Gallery is not only a custodian of Worpswede’s past but an active contributor to its evolving artistic culture, increases visitor engagement, and creates greater commercial opportunities across all price points.

For the Preservation and Promotion of the Artists of Worpswede
From Founding Masters to Contemporary Voices
Our collection celebrates the artistic legacy of the Worpswede movement, from its founding generation to the artists who continue to shape its influence today. At its core are the Founding Masters, including Fritz Mackensen, Otto Modersohn, Hans am Ende, Fritz Overbeck, Heinrich Vogeler, Paula Modersohn Becker, Carl Vinnen, and Clara Westhoff, whose work established Worpswede as one of Germany’s most important artists’ colonies.
We also highlight associated artists and members of the wider circle whose contributions broadened and enriched the movement’s creative vision. Together, these artists reflect the enduring spirit of Worpswede and show how its ideas, values, and artistic innovation continue to inspire new generations.
